Captain Matthew Webb was a British hero and the first man to swim the English Channel in 1875. Webb was a physical adventurer of amazing natural stamina.

His successful channel swim covered almost 40 miles and took over 21 hours! This amazing and unprecedented feat of endurance turned Webb into a Victorian celebrity and hero.
