Cupid On A Dolphin Tile

SKU 17381

Cupid riding on a dolphin is the centerpiece of an impressive Roman mosaic found at Fishbourne Roman Palace. Set inside a classic braided guilloche border, cupid sits astride a dolphin clutching a rein in one hand and a trident in the other. There are a few theories regarding its interpretation. Dolphins are known to be friendly to humans so it could represent affection.

It could be linked to Pliny’s story of the boy who was taken to school by a dolphin across the Bay of Naples. With its phallic overtones it could also be interpreted as something rather more erotic - the wild ride of love.

Suitable for use outdoors. Fixing Points: Four holes: in each corner of the tile.

Dimensions: H x W (mm): 98 X 98
